A Hockey Arena And Abandoned Mental Institution Were Also Used
After a short time filming exterior shots in New York City, the production of Elf shifted over to Vancouver, Canada, where all of the interior scenes and even the North Pole sections of the movie were filmed in some rather unique locations.
For all those interiors shots (the Gimbles department store, Greenway Press, the Hobbs’ apartment), production designer Rusty Smith converted an abandoned mental institution, which despite being unsettling at first, ended up being quite practical for the shoot. The North Pole scenes proved to be more problematic for the crew, and after not being able to film the wide shots in a studio, the crew shifted things over to a public use hockey arena in Vancouver and set up shop there.
Soul takes its audience through a journey to the Great Before, where the soul of jazz musician/teacher Joe (Jamie Foxx) must travel to find a way to get back to the earthly realm. Part of the magic that the entire project encapsulates is the fact that it boasts music from both Mank and Watchmen co-composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, as well as contributions from jazz impresario/The Late Late Show with Stephen Colbert band leader Jon Baptiste. That melodic harmony contributes heavily to the success of Soul, as seen in the following remarks made by Aaron Neuwirth from We Live Entertainment:
Where Is Elf Streaming?
So, where is Elf streaming this year? Well, you can currently watch Jon Favreau’s 2003 timeless story of Buddy the Elf finding his father (and true love) on Starz. You can watch the movie on the Starz website or through the premium channel’s add-on option on Amazon. Amazon offers a 7-day trial of Starz if you haven’t signed up already.
If you end up streaming Elf on Starz, don’t forget to check out all of the great bonus titles related to Elf. In addition to the movie, you can enjoy a collection of deleted scenes, a mini-documentary about how the stop-motion animation was produced, a behind-the-scenes feature with Will Ferrell, another one on the creation of the film’s sets, and even “Buddy’s Sing & Cheer Along,” a sing-a-long version of the movie.
David Fincher’s Mank features a number of actors playing icons of the 20th century – including not just Gary Oldman as Herman Mankiewicz, but also Arliss Howard as studio founder Louis B. Mayer, Charles Dance as publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, Tom Burke as the legendary Orson Welles, Toby Leonard Moore as the brilliant David O. Selznick, and Tom Pelphrey as the great Joseph Mankiewicz. One person you almost surely haven’t heard of, however, is Rita Alexander, who was the titular’s writer’s secretary and played by Lily Collins. This is primarily because there is very little substantial information available the actual woman – which presented a certain challenge for the actor as she was getting into the role.
Vince Vaughn gets the chance to play the serial killer and pull off some seriously memorable skills in Freaky, but due to the main body-swap event, the heart of his performance lies in playing a scream queen. The Wedding Crashers actor worked with 23-year-old Kathryn Newton on their characters so they could convincingly swap roles. Vaughn talked about his preference to Today with these words:
Given how famous these two have become and the close bond they share, I imagine there will come a day where they’ll act opposite one another on-screen. That said, it is worth noting that the two actors are technically involved with the same project: Small Axe, a British anthology film series available on Amazon Prime Video. Put together by filmmaker Steve McQueen, these films tells stories centered around London’s West Indian immigrant community from the late 1960s to early 1980s. Boyega stars in Red, White and Blue, and Wright stars in Mangrove.
This all certainly means major changes in the way that studios do business, but it could fundamentally change the entire theatrical exhibition industry. Without the exclusivity that theaters have always had, what are they going to do that will continue to keep the business viable? At this point, it’s far too early to tell if the business will truly need to make a drastic change, but if it does, here are a few ways that it could.
Helen (Bridget Moynahan) – John Wick, John Wick: Chapter 2
And then there is John Wick’s late wife, Helen, whose death and parting gift (Daisy) sets the whole John Wick franchise into motion. She isn’t exactly a random character, to be fair, but we only see glimpses of her throughout the first two movies (flashbacks and the recorded video on Wick’s phone). Still the film’s producers brought in a heavyweight to fill the role, none other than Bridget Moynahan. One of the main stars of Blue Bloods, Moynahan has also had big roles in shows like Sex and the City and movies including Coyote Ugly, I, Robot, and Battle: Los Angeles.
Those are just a few of the random actors, wrestlers, martial artists, and stunt actors to appear in the John Wick franchise. With the fourth and fifth chapters only a couple of years away, who knows who will make a one-off appearance in the future.
What’s crazy is not only did Riz Ahmed learn the drums for Sound of Metal, but he also had to pick up sign language. It’s seriously intense. Now Ahmed is already an accomplished rapper, so he’s already musically-inclined. But he found drums to be a completely different animal to tackle, and he’s not exactly running to another drum set anytime soon. Although it wasn’t easy to pick up, he really loved the challenge of learning about communication from a new perspective.
