Pretty Little Liars Reboot: Everything We Know So Far

Pretty Little Liars has only been off the air for three years, but a reboot of the show that turned Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario, and Shay Mitchell into stars is reportedly already in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter

The original series aired for seven seasons and followed all the mysterious twists and turns going down in Rosewood, Pennsylvania, starting with the disappearance of Alison, the leader of a clique of girls. Threatening messages from someone called “A” begin arriving to Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily which become a theme throughout the run. The show spawned two spinoffs—Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists—which each ran for one season.

THR reports that Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is working on the script. We don’t have a ton of more details yet, but here’s everything we know so far about the Pretty Little Liars reboot.

The creative team. As mentioned, Aguirre-Sacasa is attached to the project, and given the wild plot twists and turns of both Riverdale and PLL, he seems like a good choice. It’s not known if the original series creator, I. Marlene King, will be involved.

Where it will air. The project is still in its very early stages, so it’s not yet been shopped around to the networks and streaming platforms. The original Pretty Little Liars is currently streaming on HBO Max.

The cast. According to THR, the reboot will feature a “new story and new characters,” but it’s unclear currently if any of the past characters will make an appearance or how the story will connect (if at all) to the plot of the original show. Fingers crossed the original Liars appear in some capacity. It would be great to see them together again.

This post will be updated as new information becomes available.

Miley Cyrus Says This Part of Her Divorce From Liam Hemsworth ‘Really Sucked’

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth‘s announcement that they were splitting up feels like a million years ago, but it was only last August the news broke, devastating fans of the couple.

Cyrus is now opening up about what it was like to go through such a public breakup. During an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the singer said it “f*cking sucked.”

“What really sucked about it wasn’t the fact that me and someone that I loved realized that we don’t love each other the way that we used to anymore,” she said, per People. “That’s okay, I can accept that. I can’t accept the villainizing and just all those stories.” Not long after her breakup from Hemsworth became public, Cyrus was photographed in Italy making out with Kaitlynn Carter, who she subsequently dated. But people didn’t see the whole story, she says.

“It’s just amazing to me that the public kind of thinks that there is no gap in time that they didn’t see that could possibly be what led to this,” she said. “Like, it’s not, ‘One day you were happy on the carpet, and the next you’re making out with your friend in Italy,’ what the f—? Well, there was a lot of time between that you didn’t see.”

Miley Cyrus, who recently split from boyfriend Cody Simpson, said, “Men in my life have told me that I’m cold, or I’m a cold f*cking bitch because I leave when things are done,” referring to her typical response to breakups.

“That’s why I’m looking for an older man,” she said. “I don’t need a man or a woman that’s gonna take care of me. I can take care of me because I’ve got money, I’ve got all the things that I need to take care of myself. I need them to be able to take care of them.”

She continued, “I guess I really don’t need to be in a relationship at all. But it does sound nice.”

17 Face Masks With a Message: Black Lives Matter, Get Out and Vote, Pride, & More

Regardless of any political implications, wearing a face mask sends a message. It shows you care enough to put on an extra layer (even in the heat), succumbing to sweat and dreaded maskne, in an effort to flatten the curve of coronavirus infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend wearing a face covering whenever social distancing measures are difficult to maintain and, at this point, countless brands have pivoted to produce a range of masks for daily use.

Aside from doing your civic duty, you can wear a face mask that lets you send a message without saying a word. Designers and independent artisans are creating styles that raise awareness, inspire action, and donate to various causes—from supporting the Black Lives Matter movement to celebrating legendary women (like Ruth Bader Ginsburg) and encouraging passersby to get out and vote.

It’s no secret that people on Etsy are the cream of the creative crop, so we listed several necessary styles from the site—along with more face masks for a case that will help get your point across without even opening your mouth (not a single droplet was found). Ahead, 17 face masks that will let you make good trouble by just walking by.

Naomi Osaka Wore a ‘Breonna Taylor’ Face Mask at the U.S. Open

Naomi Osaka appeared at a U.S. Open match on Monday wearing a face mask that read “Breonna Taylor.” The mask paid tribute to the 26-year-old EMT who was killed by Kentucky police as she slept in her apartment on March 13, 2020.

Osaka was seen wearing the mask before she played a first-round match against Misaki Doi (Osaka won) and during post-game interviews. She told USA Today that she actually brought seven masks to the tournament, each of them honoring a victim of racial injustice. “It’s quite sad that seven masks isn’t enough for the amount of names, so hopefully I’ll get to the finals so you can see all of them,” she said.

This came just days after Osaka sat out an August 27 match she was scheduled to play. In posts on Instagram and Twitter, Osaka said she was opting out of the match to protest the August 23rd shooting of Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old who was left paralyzed from the waist down after police shot him multiple times in front of his young children in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

“Before I am an athlete, I am a Black woman,” she explained in the post. “And as a Black woman I feel as though there are much more important matters at hand that need immediate attention, rather than watching me play tennis.”

Naomi Osaka, a vocal supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, is one of many high-profile athletes and celebrities who have called public attention to recent deaths and shootings of Black people at the hands of police officers.

In a July 2020 op-ed for Esquire, Osaka wrote that she took part in protests and signed petitions after the death of George Floyd, and called for systemic change and a cultural commitment to anti-racism.

“It means so much to me that society evolves–that we take on systemic racism head-on, that the police protect us and don’t kill us,” she wrote. “But I am proud, too, of the small part I have played in changing perceptions and opinions. I love the thought of a biracial girl in a classroom in Japan glowing with pride when I win a Grand Slam. I really hope that the playground is a friendlier place for her now that she can point to a role model and be proud of who she is. And dream big.”

John Boyega Calls Out Star Wars for Giving ‘All the Nuance’ to White Characters

John Boyega refuses to pretend his experience shooting Star Wars with Disney was equivalent to his white costars.

In a new cover interview with British GQ, the actor—who portrayed Finn, a rebel stormtrooper, in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker—says his character wasn’t given the same level of “nuance” as white characters, and also that his time in the franchise changed his perspective on Hollywood.

“What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are, and then have them pushed to the side,” he said in the interview. “It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up.”

He continued, “Like, you guys knew what to do with Daisy Ridley, you knew what to do with Adam Driver. You knew what to do with these other people, but when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega, you know fuck all. So what do you want me to say? What they want you to say is, ‘I enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience…’ Nah, nah, nah. I’ll take that deal when it’s a great experience. They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley. Let’s be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knows this. Everybody knows. I’m not exposing anything.”

©Walt Disney Co./Courtesy Everett Collection

One piece of advice Boyega also shared in the interview: “My dad always tells me one thing: ‘Don’t overpay with respect.’ You can pay respect, but sometimes you’ll be overpaying and selling yourself short.”

If you think speaking out against a major franchise like Star Wars is easy, think again. Boyega told the publication he sought therapy in 2017 for “horrible personality traits, [such as] anger” before making peace with it.

“It makes you angry with a process like that. It makes you much more militant; it changes you,” Boyega explained. “Because you realize, ‘I got given this opportunity but I’m in an industry that wasn’t even ready for me.’”

He continued, “Nobody else in the cast had people saying they were going to boycott the movie because [they were in it]. Nobody else had the uproar and death threats sent to their Instagram DMs and social media, saying, ‘Black this and Black that and you shouldn’t be a Stormtrooper.’ Nobody else had that experience. But yet people are surprised that I’m this way.”

Following the release of the interview, Boyega took to Twitter to further explain his hopes for change. “These conversations and me sharing isn’t about a witch hunt,” he tweeted on Wednesday, September 2. “It’s about clarity to an anger that can be seen as selfish, disruptive and self indulgent. Obviously in hopes of better change. Bruh. In short, I said what I said. Love to you all seriously. Your support is amazing.”

21 Cute Fulani Braids to Try in 2020: Easy Protective Styles

Braids are a staple protective style for Black women. They’re convenient, low-maintenance, and come in an endless variety of styles—like Fulani braids. While the style has been around for centuries (more on that below), they’re still hugely popular for all the fun and imaginative ways you can wear them. Think bright colors, unique patterns, and a mixture of accessories in all different shapes and sized.

Here’s a quick primer on what you should know about them.

What are Fulani braids?

As celebrity hairstylist Susy Oludele—who’s responsible for some of the phenomenal styles you’ve seen on Solange—explains, Fulani braids are a mixture of cornrows and box braids and can be worn with or without beads. Most commonly, the style—which gets its name from the Fulani people in West Africa, where the braids originated—is created with cornrows in the front and box braids in the back.

The look has been modernized recently—often seen on red carpets, music videos, and in everyday life—“but it has been worn for many, many years now,” says Oludele. Symbolizing not just its African roots, Fulani braids can also represent “social status, wealth, religion, or marital status,” Oludele says, adding that “braids have always been part of our culture.”

Ready to ask your stylist for them? Ahead, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite Fulani looks and braided hairstyles—from neon green beads to platinum blonde braids.

Buffy Wicks Was Denied a Proxy Vote While on Maternity Leave—So She Brought Her Newborn to the Assembly

California Assemblywoman Buffy Wicks, who represents Berkeley and Oakland, had an important vote to cast on on August 31—supporting SB 1120, a bill that would permit duplexes to be built in areas zoned for single-family homes and increase housing access for people across the state.

Because Wicks was on maternity leave after welcoming her second daughter, she requested to vote by proxy. But Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, who can grant proxy votes to people “at a higher risk from the COVID-19 virus,” denied Wicks’ request. So, Wicks brought her one-month-old daughter to the senate floor.

The housing bill did not pass, but Wicks’ story went viral. It sparked a wider conversation about the lack of paid parental leave in the U.S., how unaffordable childcare can be, and the extremely difficult decisions working parents across the country have to make on a regular basis.

In an interview with CBS Los Angeles, Wicks said that “we’re all dealing with how we manage this new world” and categorized her experience as a “teachable moment.” She also addressed her story going viral.

“I think it touches a chord of what a lot of women are feeling around the country right now, especially with COVID,” she said. “It’s not really about me, it’s about the constraints I think families are feeling across the board.”

Rendon issued a public apology to Buffy Wicks, saying his intention “was never to be inconsiderate toward her, her role as a legislator, or her role as a mother,” and reaffirmed his commitment to inclusivity. “I commit to doing better,” he said.
