The Battle of Winterfell will soon be upon us. Needless to say, we’re deeply concerned about how many of our favorites are going to make it out of the next episode alive. Each new Game of Thrones theory discovered by intrepid Internet users just increases the sense of dread.
The latest theory picking up steam on Reddit, a place where you could spend an entire day just reading GoT speculation, comes from the first George R.R. Martin book in the Song of Ice and Fire series and posits hows Arya Stark might die. Gulp.
Reddit user ultra1994 points to a conversation between Arya and Jon Snow back at Winterfell, in what would have been season one of the show. “‘The show is done,‘ [Jon] said. He bent to scratch Ghost behind the ears. The white wolf rose and rubbed against him,” the passage, as transcribed, by the Reddit user says. “You had best run back to your room, little sister. Septa Mordane will surely be lurking. The longer you hide, the sterner the penance. You’ll be sewing all through winter. When the spring thaw comes, they will find your body with a needle still locked tight between your frozen fingers.”
Arya, if you’ll remember, is forced to sew with her sister, Sansa, and the other women of Winterfell when she’d rather be out working on her archery and swordsmanship skills with her brothers. (We see this take place in the pilot episode.) The reference could be as simple as that. But…her sword is also named Needle—and that’s where things get scary as this could imply that Arya will die in the Battle of Winterfell and not be discovered until the “spring thaw.” If that happened, it is highly probable that her sword, Needle, would still be in her hands.
